Hi All Prash here discussing smart phones!

As always, people want to do and get things done right away and they do not wish to spend much amount of time on any task like browsing, checking e-mail and thousand more tasks, which resulted in the increase in the usage of internet driven mobile applications rather than performing those tasks on the desktop computer.

Mobile applications are not new at all as it appears to be these days and they did not come just with the iPhone (and apps) but they were there all along since Nokia started releasing a stream of smart phones, years ago, built on the Symbian OS.

Smart Phones

I would agree that iPhone has created a ‘feeling’ in people to get a smart phone, but it wouldn’t prevail as the best smart phone if it doesn’t upgrade its hardware and software specifications in part with the other android compatible smart phones (ex: from HTC, Samsung..).

Android :

Pros :

- Multi-tasking among apps.

- Large community of developers

- Over 70,000 apps available for Android

- Scope for availability of more applications (with more functionality)  as more developers would be involved, as the applications are mostly developed in Java (which is ‘known’ among many developers). This is        my opinion, and this kind of conflicts with wikipedia’s opinion.

- Recently, Android apps are allowed to be used (sold) in numerous countries.

Cons :

-  Android does not support video calls ( this could be achieved with third party apps).

- The OS does not have full Unicode support.

iPhone :

Pros :

- Excellent touch screen (in terms of sensitivity), which no other phone has achieved, though they claim to be touch screen phones. I believe Nexus one and other recent HTC phones are the only ones which are comparable with iPhone.

Cons :

- locked completely with networks. (recently Apple has considered unlocked versions)

- I feel that the phone is pretty expensive for the features it provides.

- Multi-tasking is not allowed

In the past six months, smartphone buyers in the U.S. were more likely to choose Android-powered devices over any others, including iPhones.

The Android platform has been strongly challenging Apple’s mobile offerings for quite some time now, and the release of the shiny newFroyo (a.k.a AndroidAndroid 2.2) OS leaves little to be desired.

Software aside, Android-powered hardware is as diverse as it is impressive.

Android phones range from affordable models suitable for families with kids (e.g., Motorola’s Charm, a surefire winner for the teen girl set) to high-powered, 4-inch, 8-megapixel superphones fit to satiate the geekiest of gadget fiends (Droid X and Galaxy S, anyone?).

All of those reasons, coupled with network diversity and relative affordability, have catapulted Android phones to a leading position for new gadget-buyers this year — no mean feat, considering that the iPhone 4 produced the “most successful iPhone launch ever” — which was accompanied by as much media hype as fan frenzy.

Data from Nielsen shows that despite a successful launch for the iPhone 4, Android devices still rose to capture 32% of the market of new smartphone buyers between January and August 2010.

In the end, it’s hard to tell which mobile OS will come out on top, but we’re surprised that the diaspora of Android devices has made such strides in such a relatively short amount of time.

Have you bought an Android phone, an iPhone or a BlackBerry in the past six months? In the comments, let us know what prompted your decision and whether you’re happy with your choice.

Hey Prash good post – I have had a few debates over the last couple of years about which is best, iphone or android – i am in the android camp myself and feel like it is starting to over take the iphone already. I use a HTC Hero over iphone 3. I cant wait to be able to upgrade to the generation of htc android phone in a year!

I feel the android market needs to catch up but it will!!
